Kauffman Sketchbook - Entrepreneurial Mindset - Video 1

I am Gary Shan Agur, I am the founder of the entrepreneurial learning initiative, we are the creators of the ice house entrepreneurship program. We all know that entrepreneurship education has never been more important than it is today, and yet the subject of entrepreneurship is still not well understood and consequently much of our efforts to teach entrepreneurship are limited in terms of efficacy, scalability and scope.
In the past we ignored entrepreneurs. They were looked upon as Mavericks or fringe players who bucked the system. Today they've become the engines that are now driving our economies, and yet while we know a lot about the inner workings of large established companies and small business management, the entrepreneurial process is still widely misunderstood. Much of our efforts are over influenced by the Silicon Valley narrative which often leads to plan and pitch approach where students are encouraged to develop new technologies, conduct market research, write business plans, and present their ideas to potential investors, yet what many don't realize is that very few businesses actually start this way. In fact, far less than 1% of all new ventures created in the U.S. each year receive venture capital investment at their inception so while these elite Silicon Valley success stories may capture headlines, they do not accurately reflect the process that most entrepreneurs undertake. Others fail to distinguish between entrepreneurship and small business management. They tend to approach a startup as if it were simply a smaller version of a large corporation. They encourage students to learn business management skills such as marketing and finance, accounting and legal structures, skills that are important for managing an existing business get skills that are not all that helpful when it comes to identifying and evaluating new opportunities. The truth is entrepreneurship is not management and neither of these approaches accurately portrays the process that entrepreneurs typically undertake.
We also found that entrepreneurs are not likely to be experts with years of experience in their chosen field. In fact, many have no experience at all and yet somehow they managed to succeed. The real questions is how? how are they able to identify and evaluate opportunities that others overlooked? what is the mindset and the process that ultimately enables them to succeed? That's why we created the Icehouse entrepreneurship program. We wanted to design a program that would inspire and engage a broad range of students from a wide variety of backgrounds, disciplines, and interests. We wanted to develop an experiential problem-based approach that would immerse students in real-world resource constrained circumstances that will help them develop critical thinking, communication, effective problem-solve, and other key entrepreneurial skills. And, we wanted to create a scalable program one that would not require the instructor to become an expert in the field of entrepreneurship.
At the end of the day entrepreneurship is more than an academic discipline. It's really a mindset. It provides a framework for thinking and acting that can empower anyone to succeed and in today's world it's a mindset that every student needs.

How Entrepreneurs Make Millions - The Entrepreneurial Mindset - Video 2
Transcript:
There are three basic ways of earning money which include trading time for money, trading money for money, and trading expertise value for money. Society and the formal education system promote the first method of earning money which involves trading time for money. In other words, you work for someone else for a specific amount of time and then they pay you. Working for someone else drains your energy and you don't make much money.
The second way to earn money is utilized by a small portion of the population and involves trading money for money. In other words you are earning money through investing, investing can be risky because if you lack additional funds, then how can you invest any money in the first place. Therefore, many people can't even try this option because they only have enough money to pay their bills.
The third way to earn money is the best option. This entrepreneurial option involves trading expertise value for money. This is the strategy of entrepreneurial experts; you have a flexible schedule, work less and earn more, you can make thousands of dollars a day in this option. In order to earn money through trading expertise value for money you need to first figure out who you are and what you can give to others, what information do you know that could help others, you can find value from previous work experience or even from your hobbies. From this, you can create your intellectual property. What is intellectual property? How big is the market for intellectual property? Is there room for you in the intellectual property market? These may be a few of the questions you have when you're investigating the information marketing business.
First of all, anyone can create intellectual property. You don't need to be a rocket scientist, you just need to have an area or expertise or access to an expert and a drive to succeed. Intellectual property combines e-commerce and book publishing, for example, you can write and sell an e-book. Recent research has found that approximately six out of every ten American adults surf the internet on a daily basis seeking out entertainment, education, and to shop for products. People are more comfortable buying online than in the past. The market throught the internet is global and it encompases millions of people. Therefore the information marketing business has room for everyone. When you market on the Internet you market to your niche, therefore you don't have to worry whether or not your neighbor will want to buy your product, the Internet opens the niche market for you. If creating and selling intellectual property on the Internet is so simple, why is not everyone doing this? The formal educational system and previous societal beliefs are to blame. In school we are taught to finish school and then become an employee at a company the entrepreneurial spirit is not promoted, in fact it is almost shunned. Do not let societal beliefs stop you, the intellectual property market is wide, diverse, and ready to fill your pocketbook with cash.

So we've had a chance to now ask you a hundred different questions and you have hopefully paid attention, filled out each one and you have yes me all the way down on your page or your excel file, or your worksheet. What I want you to do now is add up all of these yeses and all the noes the total should equal 100. But how many “yeses” do you have? and how many “noes” do you have? Take a minute, pause this video and go count them up now.
So now that you've had it up here yeses and noes. Let's see how you did so if you scored over 90 you are a hardcore entrepreneur, you were born to be in business for yourself. What are you waiting for? Let's go get it on start ASAP (as soon as possible). If you scored 80 to 89 you are an entrepreneur making, there are few things that you need to work on, but entrepreneurship is for you time to make things happen. If you scored 70 into 79 you are a wannabe entrepreneur, you'll have to stretch outside your comfort zone to make things happen. Look at each question you answered no or false and think of ways you can keep them from holding your business back. If you scored 60 to 69 you're borderline entrepreneur, consider looking at established franchises where there is more structure and less risk. If you scored 50 to 59 you're a questionable entrepreneur, you need to really dig deep and think about if this is for you or not, talk to other business owners and get a sense of their daily lives before making a decision to go out on your own. And if you scored under 50 that's a failing score entrepreneurship isn't for you.
So that is the entrepreneur mindset test I would love to know how did you guys score? Leave your final total in the comments below. How many yeses did you get? and what group do you fell into hopefully it gave you some further insights into yourself? and what would be required to be a successful entrepreneur? I would love to hear again; 1 what your scored was?; 2 your general thoughts. What you learned from going through this test, hopefully you went through all the questions, you paid attention, you did the work. Let me know your thoughts, leave in the comments below, thank you guys so much for watching, I believe in you, I hope you continue to believe in yourself and whatever your one word is, much love and i'll see you soon.

The Entrepreneurial Mindset - Video 4
Transcript
Entrepreneurship is not a job. It's not a lifestyle. It's really a mindset. It's a mindset of problem solving. It's a mindset of changing the world and it's not just for businesses, it's not just for starters. You could be an employee and have the entrepreneurial mindset if you're going there with the understanding that my job here, my role, my function is to bring about positive change, my function is to solve problems. Any type of organization, any type of person who is about bringing about positive change to the world and that world does not have to be the globe but the world in which they operate. Many nonprofit organizations want to bring about positive change in their areas of concern. This is the entrepreneurial mindset it's not about making money, it's about improving lives and changing the world even if that world is just your block.
So, if you're an employee and you want job security, then learn to think and behave like an entrepreneur when you go into that job your function is to say, how can I make this place run better? How can I make boss's life easier? What problems can I solve? What can I streamline? What can i do today that will make this place more productive? It's not about punching the clock. It's not about signing in and signing out. It's about really showing up and trying to make a difference. Anyone who operates like this in any area of their lives will have fulfilment and will never be out of a job because when it comes time to make cuts that will be the last person that they'd cut, that would be the last person that they would get rid of, and if something happens the company goes on business or there's downsizing and god forbid you do end up without a job.
Once the world gets out that you're available, recruiters will come beating down your door. You won't have to send out resumes. They'll come looking for you because they know that you are agent of change you are one who operates on the entrepreneurial mindset if you want permanent change for filling change then learn to think, act, and produce like an entrepreneur. The new face of business is you, you Inc, you are the product, you have stockholders, you have investors, you have something to deliver. It's all of your talents, it's all of your positive attributes, it's all of your desires and taking all of that integrating it with your passions and delivering something that no one else around you can deliver, you Inc. You are the new face of business. This is the entrepreneurial mindset.

Advice from Richard Branson on the Entrepreneurial Mindset - Video 5

Advice from Richard Branson on the entrepreneurs mindset as seen in zoo go triple zero.
Having a personality of caring about people is important. You can't be a good leader unless you generally like people that is how you bring out the best in them. I'm inquisitive and I love a new challenge and if I feel that we could do it better than it's been done by other people will have a go, I'm still may be Peter Pan doesn't want to grow up. I don't thinks as work as work and play as play, it's all living. My interest in life comes from sending myself huge apparently unachievable challenges and trying to rise above them.
I've had to create companies that I believe in one hundred percent. These are companies I feel will make a genuine difference, did I have to be willing to find the time myself to talk about them, promote them, and market them. I don't want to spend my life doing something that I'm not proud of.

How Successful Entreprenurs Think - Multiplier Mindset - Video 6
Transcript
So, first of all, the great entrepreneurs developed new capabilities for themselves and the second part of it is the great entrepreneurs build a formula around their capabilities that are always the same, so for Apple the formula is, we make beautiful technology that people love using and this is a formula when you think about it that could last for a hundred years. So, I saw an article once and they said that apple is most likely of the great technology companies today to be still in operation 100 from now, and the reason is, they have a formula so, it doesn't really matter what kind of technology is being made, and so they can adjust to any kind of technology, but the one thing is that it has to be beautiful technology, it has to be beautifully packaged. The experience of using it has to be sort of a beautiful experience and the individuals, the customers, and clients who are using the technology love the experience. So, what they have I would say going back to the question, what is the difference between entrepreneurs in general and great entrepreneurs is that great entrepreneurs don't try to solve problems, they try to create capabilities, they try to create capabilities that they themselves want to have, and then they have a formula so that no matter how technology changes, how the world changes, how the marketplace, the economy changes they have a single strategy that they can stay with forever, and I found that when you give these two differentiating points to most entrepreneurs, they can make very very rapid progress in identifying capabilities that don't exist now, that they would like to have for themselves and also, that they can create a formula that they can stay with forever and, all of a sudden what might have been just sort of a reasonably successful entrepreneur, they immediately make the shift to being a truly great entrepreneur.
I'm often asked because I've coached a lot of them. Dan how is it that successful entrepreneurs think differently from other people? and my first answer is that well, first of all that entrepreneurs think differently than other people for two reasons: number one is that they take total responsibility for their own financial success and security in the world where a lot of people are looking for an employer that actually do that for them to take responsibility, or the government, or you know, some other institution who's going to actually be responsible for their financial welfare and so that's the first way that entrepreneurs are different, and the second way that entrepreneurs are different is that they understand that they don't get paid until they've first of all create values so, they don't get paid if they don't create value and they don't get paid first if they don't create value so, there's this sense that they always have to be useful in the eyes of consumer and and they may it doesn't matter how important or how valuable, or how useful what you do is in your own mind, you know that you think that what you do is really super and really wonderful, but unless there's someone who wants to write a check for that. It's not really worth anything at all and that's a hard thing for a lot of people to succeed at. So, that's the general difference between entrepreneurs and non entrepreneurs and that's not to say that three are lots of people who aren't entrepreneurs, who don't take responsibility for themselves and don't realize they have to create value, but they are the exceptions in their world where just to be an entrepreneur and to survive as an entrepreneur you have to have this.
Now, the second question is what's is the difference between entrepreneurs and really successful entrepreneurs? because I think that is what every entrepreneur wants to know where is the useful differences that I can focus on in my own performance based on the performance of the best performing entrepreneurs. We’re always looking for, you know, how do the superstars do it? that's in any area of life, but especially in the entrepreneurial world and so, I will use the term superstar because they operate in a way that is just dramatically different , dramatically better, and dramatically bigger than ordinary entrepreneurs, and my sense is that this is what i'm going to describe here has probably always been true but it's being magnified and multiplied more in the 21st century than it was in the previous centuries, and that is, that instead of trying to solve problems in the marketplace, known problems in the marketplace, the really great entrepreneurs are only interested in creating new capabilities. So, if I were to use a percentage, I would say that probably 95% of all entrepreneurs are trying to solve an existing problem, so it’s the clients and customers need something solved, but in many ways it’s the clients or customers who are defining the activity of the entrepreneurs but the really great entrepreneurs really aren't interested in solving a problem. They're very fascinated and motivated to create a new capability and one of my real role models here and he may be one of the greatest role models in the history of entrepreneurship is steve jobs at apple because steve jobs during the entire time that he was at apple, both the first time he was there and then when he came back never did focus groups, he would never bring in customers and clients and asked them what they needed, what were their problems? what did they want to solve? but instead, what the focused on he said if there was a really great new capability I wanted for myself in the world, what would it be? and you know, one of the answers was, I would like to be able to operate a computer without knowing code and a lot of people don't know this, but steve jobs wasn't a great technology guy and so he said you know it would just be a lot easier for me if could just have click, I could just click so, he didn't invent this but he was the one who made it famous. It was called the graphic user interface where instead of learning code and punching in code, all you did with the mouse is that you clicked, you click the cursor, you click done and you got the program, things switch for anything so everybody in the computer world now uses graphic user interface, but the reason why apple was the first to use graphic user interface faster than anyone else is because Steve Jobs wanted this capability for himself. The other thing is, he said with you know cell phones which have been around for many years before Steve Jobs was there and he said, why don't? I would like to have a capability where this could connect to the internet and I could have all sorts of different functions on the internet, all sorts of what got to be called applications where if there was any kind of new electronic capability I would just be able to download it to my phone and that created the apple store, and you had iTunes where you could download things and you had the iPhone and so, what his rule was that where all projects get started is that “I want a particular new capability for myself and if it really works for me, probably a lot of other people will want to have it and I don't have to worry about what their needs are, I don't have to worry about their problems, i'm just going to take things that I need personally for my life” and then he wrapped a formula around this and this is the second part.

Les Brown: Discover the Entrepreneurial Mindset (1/3) - Video 7
Transcript
Hello my name is Les Brown, I want to talk to you about the mindset of the entrepreneur, you know it took a friend of mine 14 years to convince me to do what I'm doing right now. I kept putting it off, why? because I didn't believe in myself, I don't have a college education, and I felt that even though he believed in me and I didn’t believe in myself, I felt inferior to people with college education. He kept saying to be less, you can do more than be a disc jockey, I was a radio personality in Columbus Ohio and all the occasions that we got together he would always continue to come back to me again and again and again, in fact, I just asked him a few weeks ago, I said look here! tell me what would made you stay in my ear? and he said, “I just felt it was my duty” and you know, sometimes in life you have to believe in somebody's belief in you until your belief kicks in. Now, I dont know you, I can't even see you, but here's what I know about you. You have something special, you have greatness within you, I can say that to you based upon my own experience. If anybody told me just getting started so I don't know what you do, you might be selling a product or service, you might have some skill and knowledge that people need right now. I don't know what you do but here's what I know, you don't have to be great to get started but you have to get started to be great. If anybody told me just having the courage to get started that it was possible, that I could earn more, that I can touch people's lives, that I could do things that I didn't even realize that I could do, I can just tell you right now one of the things that you have to do is just decide, I'm going to do this, I'm going to make this happen,
I remember once going to an event and they had a variety of motivational speakers there and one of the guys that open for zig ziglar, he was quiet, he had low energy, he didn't have any personality, in fact, he was boring, the audience as quiet as a graveyard between funerals and I remember going to sleep and the audience woke me up with a polite applause and I said, “man, he was boring” I did not know at that time I was seated next to his brother in law and he said, “you ought to be that boring and make the kind of money he made”; I said, “well, how much did he bake?” he said five thousand dollars. I looked at my watch I said, “five thousand dollars” I said, “I know I could do that” does it ever happened to you that you saw something like this that you say, “hey if they could do it I can do it and from that time to this time i'll never forget something that he said, the speaker on the platform he said, “I know that I don’t have personality, and passion, and energy I know that I’m boring, but the reason I’m standing up here and you are seated out there is because I represent the thoughts you have rejected for yourself” whoa man! when said that, that hit me dead between the eyes because I remember saying to myself “I can't do that, I don't have a college education, I can't do that Mike, I have never worked for ATT Procter & Gamble, McDonald's Corporation, IBM, Xerox, I can't compete with the guys, those guys out there I dont have the resources, I don't have a four color brochure, had all of these excuses, I mean, one day was talking to it and the line went dead not calling back I said, “hey Mike” I said “we lost the signal” he said, “we didn't lose the signal” I said, what happened? he's gonna hung up I said, “well why would you do that?” he said, “you argue for your limitations you get to keep fl on (3:38) I said, oh my god! he said “you better hope I win this conversation” I said, “ok, talk to me, talk to me!” and I tell you I’m so glad he did that.
From that time to his time I have traveled around the world. From that time to this time I went from earning fifty dollars an hour to $25,000 an hour because I got started. From that time to this time I went from just speaking locally to speaking around the world and getting over $125.000 dollars an hour. I had no idea there are things that you're going to be able to do that eyes have not seen, ear has not heard, there are things that you have in you that you don’t even know but until you get sat outside of your comfort zone, you will never discover, you have something special, you have greatness within you but in order to manifest your greatness you have got to put yourself in a perpetual state of discomfort. Yes, you have got to challenge yourself, you got to raise the bar on yourself, you have got to get busy, you got to work your plan even if you have got a job right now you got to work yourself out of it, you have got to have an exit date where you say “hey! I have had it. It's time for me to do me, to pursue my dream, to work my plan, to implement the things that I want for myself and for my family and for my kids” and what is your legacy? what do you want to do for yourself? In my case, I wanted to be able to take care of my mother, I’m adopted and I feel like a prahalis could have said all that I am and all that I ever hope to be I owe to my mother, my mother adopted six kids and along with me that made seven and she was a domestic worker on Miami beach and I said “mama” she said, “what is it Leslie” - “one day when I become grown I'm gonna buy your home, I’m gonna buy you a big beautiful home just like this”. I bought my mother the first home 10,000 square feet had a 12 foot deep olympic sized swimming pool on our golf course and I would have never been able to do that if I had not got started with my dream and so, at the end of the day you have something special, you are watching this right now for a reason because you have something of value, this is your time and as you begin to look at yourself, and look at your goals and look at your dreams, decide that you're going to focus on your strengths what is it you want to do? and decide that you're going to master that you can say to yourself I got this, this is my space and when you do that, when you find something that is your passion, that turns you on when you do that to the best of your ability they said, “that success is doing what you love to do and you do it so well that people are paying you to do it” that's what I do as a speaker you know I love to talk it's all five people to pay me to talk to it so you want to have a good time, you want enjoy yourself and you want to get out of your fear and just become bold, I believe leap and grow your wings on the way down absolutely. - “well I don't know what to do” well, just get started if you turn right if you are in the wrong direction thats turn around and you will be going in the right direction, just get started doing what you supposed to do, get busy and you'll be surprised at the breakthrough, you'll be surprised how things begin to come together for you I had no idea.
So ,I want to leave this with you, you have something special, the world is waiting, there are customers that are waiting for your services, for you product, for your ideas, for you skills, for your expertise. It's time for you to show up absolutely, stand up for your dream, stand up for your business, make it happen this Mrs. made me Brown's baby boy, you got greatness within you. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Les Brown: Discover the Entrepreneurial Mindset (2/3) - Video 8
Transcript
Hello my name is Les Brown once again I want to talk to you about the mindset of the entrepreneur and I want to talk you telling you a story. See as an entrepreneur you would have to tell your story. Every time that I speak as an entrepreneur I have to tell my story, and why is that important? because people do business with people they know, like, and trust, so when you tell your story people get a chance to know you. I was talking to a friend of mine today and she's going to give a presentation in Jamaica so I say “tell me your story”, so she said “well, I was an assistant principal for 25 years I said “and what do you now? she said, “well I have retired and i'm refire dai said what do you mean by that she said “well, I retired from being an assistant principal but to me retirement means fading away. So now I'm an author im speaker, I teach people how to put together travel packages, I’m a travel agent, and I help people to begin to add more adventure to their lives” I said “very good” and so then she went to talk about her education I said “well first of all I said here's what I want you to know as an entrepreneur and this is what you're going to be talking to people to attract customers I said “let me give you some points about what it is you need to do in order to attract more customers and for people want to say I want to do business with you” as this number one start off telling them who you are and why you do what you do and why is this important because when people hear you speak as an entrepreneur, when you are presenting yourself are asking questions: who are you? what do you have? and why should I care? So told Cynthia, - “Cynthia if I were you here's how I would open up “hello! how many of you have goals you want to achieve? raise your hands, very good! let me share something with you.
One of the things that I want you to do right now is think about your goals. I used to be an assistant principal for over 20 years and I decided after retiring I was not just going to fade away, I wanted to do something else and I put together travel groups for people to travel around the world to live their dreams and now i'm an author and I’m a speaker and this something that I enjoy doing, this is something that turns me on. What turns you on? because what I want to do is show you how you can begin to see the world on your terms from a perspective that will add more zest to your life. Helen Keller said “life is either a daring adventure or it’s boring”, and so my husband and I, we are looking for people who want to live a daring life with looking for some adventure and I said, “you got to make it exciting for people and give them an experience, you see, as an entrepreneur we have got to be strategic with our story and we've got to be experiencing. Strategic, what do you mean? because what were doing is distract, dispute, and inspire. People already have a mindset about what it is that they want. When you tell your story as an entrepreneur about your product, about your skills, or about your business, you're disrupting the story that's already in their head, maybe about somebody else that they are already dealing with, or they're looking at someone else, and so what you want to do is interrupt that story with your story so they don't look any place else, so they'll know that you are the one and through your presentation you dismantle their belief system and begin to encourage them in the process of your presentation to create a thirst for you, for what it is you do there's no saying you could take a horse to the water, you can't make them drink however through telling your story strategically and experimentally that you will begin to not only expand their minds about the possibilities about it is you provide, but you create a thirst for what it is that you provide, where they want to, that's what you want to create, they want to, where they want to do business with you.
I never forget I was going to hire a guy to be my CPA and at the door when he greeted me, he shook my hand and the way turned and walked down the hall he said “I'm excited about how were going to take your business to the next level”. He had already closed me, we had to even pull out the contract yet, but there was a mindset and a steered of I got you buddy, you're up in my space right now, I own this space and so as an entrepreneur when you tell your story you want to tell it with confidence and want when you speak you want to have level of confidence and competence about what it is that you are speaking on, you want to know your story you want to know the story about your competition, you want know the marketplace. So, when the person speaks to you, they know this is who you are, you have got this and when you do that, let me share something with you: “they'll leave there as mother Teresa would say, “in a spirit of I know I’m in the right place”

Les Brown: Discover the Entrepreneurial Mindset (3/3) - Video 9
Transcript
Hello! this is Les Brown and I want to talk to you about the mindset of the entrepreneur and what it takes for you to win in your business. When I started our in business and I think all entrepreneurs have to do this, I had to find a way that would make me stand out. What's it about you, about what it is that you provide that will make you stand out from the competition? my particular case I noticed that most speakers had memorized scripts, and so, I said, “wait a minute! what is it that can make me stand apart?” one I read two to three books a week and so I trained myself to speak extemporaneously. The other thing is, I trained myself to custom design my presentation rather than just going in and and doing an information dump I trained myself to ask the customer questions to find out what their needs were, and then, I fit my presentation to answer their needs and all that I get, I get understanding. Look at yourself, what is it that's different about you? make yourself stand out. Henry David Thoreau said, “do not go where the path may lead, go where there is no path and leave a trail” when you find out what is it about your service, about your delivery of your things that you are proving, your skills, your knowledge, your products. When you find ways to do that in a special way.
I remember I was in Cincinnati Ohio, I was going to give a presentation and the gentleman who picked me up in the limousine when I came outside I have never had this happened to me before. He went and he got my luggage in baggage claim as we were walking to the limousine all of a sudden out of nowhere, he pulls out this carpet and he rolled out the carpet in front of me. I said, “whoa” and so he said, “I want to give your red carpet treatment, come on down he said every time you come back to Cincinnati I want you to know my name”, I said, “you got me, you got me and then when we pull up to the place he got out everything opened the door and he threw the comfort (2:12) not again. I will never forget that as for over 16 years and every time I come back to Cincinnati I ask for Jonathan, I want to know is he here? his name was Jonathan White and so what it that is unique about you? whenever I give a presentation I find out the theme, I find out what are the five things you want your audience to walk away with I’ll talk to the people that are promoting the event, and then I'll talk to the people that's in the audience, and then I will marry that. Now, why do you do that? well, in order to be successful in business and people are voting with their dollars you have got to be willing to do the things a day others won't do in order to have the things tomorrow others won't have. Most won't do that. It's much easier to come in and just regurgitate some information, see if information can change people everybody would skinny, rich and happy. So, my goal is to create an experience for people when you touch their minds and you touch their heart they will remember you, they have emotional memory and so, what are the triggers you can provide for you customers that will keep you in their minds? following them up even if they said “no” because they said “no” today does not mean they will say “no” tomorrow, you have got to follow up them again and again and say, “look here I was just thinking about you, we were talking the other day and you mentioned something, I found this article and I thought maybe it would be of some value for you”.
One of the things that I think that's very important is that you give before you ask . I remember when wanted to become a disc jockey and I did volunteer work for the disc jockeys, would never come out into the parking lots, their cars be waxed and clean inside out and they said, “hey who did this?” - “oh I did sir, how much you're judge on man?” - “oh nothing sir, I just wanted to help out”. Here's what I was doing, building relationships, giving before I asked, you have got to give before you ask, creating value. I just want to get my foot in the door, I want him to know that I was serious. It's a friend of mine he calls himself billionaire PA. Now PA stands for personal assistant. Now, he sees himself as a billionaire and what he does is that he sells t-shirts in the corner of Los Angeles and he sells over 5000 a year but he's also a personal assistant. He said, “in my mind I'm not a personal assistant, I’m a billionaire, I’m building my own business”. I bought a t-shirt from him. At the time I bought the t-shirt from him, he reached in bag and he pull out a camera. Everybody who buys a t-shirt from him, he video tapes up his new customer and he sends out five videos a day. He says, - “man I'm going to touch a billion people” I say, - “get out of here”. Now, here’s a guy that he was an ex-offender, he was turned down for over a hundred and twenty five jobs, he went to college, he got a degree in marketing and he got another degree in business and he couldn't find a job because he's an ex-felon and one day his mother called him and he answered the phone, he said, - “I don't look for jobs, I create them” and on that particular day he decided to create some t-shirts with special slogans on them. God’s on my team who’s on yours? he was sleeping in his car, he was homeless but now, he has his own home, now he has staff, now he's going to be apart of a commercial that well be at the super bowl. In 2013 billionaire PA, looking for ways in which he can serve his customers, looking for ways where he can stay out front, looking for ways that he can make it happen no matter what.
Now, think about you, you have more than billionaire PA, you have more resources you have a technology team that can provide for you with innovative creative thinking anything you need to tell your story more effectively and get it around the globe its available to you. Right now, think about yourself, think about your goals, think about your dreams, what is it that you can do? what kind of experience can you create for your customers that will allow them to pass the word about you? that will allow them to think about you when they have needs, when they are looking for someone to help them to resolve their problems? when you think about today's marketplace is more challenging than ever before, but we are living at a time that we know anything possible. You have something special. It's possible that you can live your dreams, it’s possible that you can carve out a strategy that will allow you to do market takeaways, that you can become the dominant voice in your industry. And it’s necessary that you hold yourself to a higher standard. It's necessary that you incorporated technology and your story and your imagination for looking for ways in which you can take your business to the next level and create a unique experience for your customers because you have an energy signature that will cause people to think about you, and it's you. George Bernard Shaw said, “the people that make it in his life they look around for the circumstances that they want and if they can’t find them, they create them. It’s you. You have got to take responsibility for what it is you want; and it's hard, easy is not an option. It's easy to quit, it’s easy to come up with excuses, it's easy to become frustrated, it's easy to throw in the towel on yourself but, I had a mentor who said, -” if you do what is easy your life will be hard, but if you do what is hard your life will be easy”. It's hard not to give yourself a pass. It’s hard when you have been rejected again and again to come back, it’s hard when you run out of money, you run out of ideas, and people disappoint you. You to pick yourself up and say, “I’m gonna make it happen in spite of”, it’s hard, but you got to find out what will make it worth it for you, what's your why. Nietzsche said, - “if you know the why for living you can endure almost any how”. You have something special, you have got greatness within you, you owe it to yourself, you owe to your family, to owe to the people that believe in you to make it happen. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. This is Les Brown.

Why Entrepreneurial Mindset Matters - Video 10
Transcript
If you're an engineer or an engineering student, this question is for you: what is the key to success? is that the technical skills that you've learned in school, it certainly contributes, but what if there's more to it? have you ever thought about the way you think? researchers call that metacognition. It's a study of mindset. Mindset is a collection of attitudes and dispositions that you apply to thousands of situations every day. It's the way you think about the world around you, more importantly it often determines how you apply your skills. Let me share an example; consider a medical doctor, maybe a surgeon. They have developed a set of skills through study and practice, they know how to make an incision, locate anatomical elements and close, that's good but a surgeon becomes great when they coupled their technical skills with the mindset that's focused on care for the fellow man. That's not a skill, that’s a mindset and a surgeon with that mindset will be continually motivated to keep their skills sharp all the while thinking about the patient.
This is a tandem bike. It's interesting because much like skillset and mindset. It requires both parties to work together to move forward. Skill set provides much of the power and support while mindset provides the direction. Now, there are a lot of mindsets you can develop, however, one mindset in particular has been responsible for much of human progress. It's for thousands of industries created billions of jobs and lifted myriads out of poverty. We call this “the entrepreneurial mindset” what's remarkable about entrepreneurial mindset is that it's not about new ventures. It applies in every situation at a company, non profit, government, or at a university and its extremely powerful when coupled with engineering skills like yours. With an entrepreneurial mindset you're agent of change empowered to design the world, and if that's not a success I don't know what is.
Okay we are ready to define the entrepreneurial mindset after years of research working with more than 36 institutions of engineering higher education, collaborating with hundreds of faculty members, and studying entrepreneurial thinkers. We've arrived at simple report definition, the three C's of the entrepreneurial mindset. If you're at all curious about this definition check out our other videos or resources.

How to Cultivate an Entrepreneurial Mindset - Project Management Training - Video 11
Transcript
Today we are talking about one of my favorite topics “how to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset?” well more and more today managers are required to be more on the front line of strategy in innovation where in project management as a matter of fact, there are business acumen and strategic alignment are becoming required skills for project managers whereas in the past they were required to be in the back office and really focus on implementation, planning and estimating, but today companies want an entrepreneurial mindset.
Well, I want to start with the definition because that term is kind of thrown around a little bit and I want start with clarity of what it is. So, some people think it’s a business model. Well, it's not a business model, it’s a state of mind. So, it really orients human conduct towards entrepreneurial activities or outcomes. So, those with an entrepreneurial mindset are drawn to opportunities, innovation, and new value creation. Some of the characteristics that we commonly think about are people who have the ability to calculate risk, take calculated risk, and accept uncertainty. Well what are some signs, some ways that you can recognize if you have it? well here are, they are more than these, but here are just a few okay.
- So first of all, you take action.
- Here's a contradiction it seems but, you are fearless but, you are scared so it would be crazy not to be scared because there are some things that entrepreneurs do that's new and never done before. So, they take the fear and they do it anyway.
- They are also resourceful. They are able to find people who can get things done so they find where maybe their gaps are and find people to fill them.
- They obsess about cash flow because typically the opportunities they are doing they want to get a return on investment.
- They also recover quickly, you may have heard of fail fast and fail often so, maybe that's a sign of an entrepreneur but they are able to get back on their feet quickly.
- Then, they focus on what matters.
So, again they are more than these but here are just a few. So, what are the benefits and why do companies really want people to develop an entrepreneurial mindset? well they think holistically across the enterprise or even the project. They also understand the business drivers, what's impacting the project and how their project can impact the business. They are able to evaluate and take necessary risk and also again take action. Well, if you find that maybe you are trying to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset for yourself, then, how do you do it? so I wanted to just share a few steps that I use for people on mentor.
- First of all, make a development plan. Think about the ones that you want to develop, create some opportunities around them to develop yourself.
- Find an accountability partner. Somebody that you can call and you feel comfortable with, checking in that they can hold you accountable and also, find a mentor, find an entrepreneurial mentor, they love talking about this stuff they have a passion for what they do.
- Set some checkpoints. Some milestones where you can check your progress along the way.
- And create a tracking template. So, if these are a few you're trying to develop, again use a template to track your progress.
- Then, evaluate your progress along the checkpoints.
- And then, as you do you review that with your accountability partner and your mentor, talk through some of the things that maybe you find scary and talk through those things.
- Then, also it’s a matter of practice just rinse and repeat, just keep doing this until you cultivate one of your own, and if you need a tool to help you manage your plan then sign up for our software now at projectmanager.com

Building an Entrepreneurial Mindset - Video 12
Transcript
Hello, my name is Cheryl Griffin and I'm the founder of Griffin works. All of us are looking for ways to be more creative and innovative today, and one the keys to unlocking your potential is an entrepreneurial mindset, a way of thinking and behaving like an entrepreneur. This doesn't mean you have to be an entrepreneur, this doesn't mean you have to start a business. You can create more value just by behaving and thinking like an entrepreneur. Let me share with you a few key attributes what it means to be and think like an entrepreneur:
- Learning to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations is one of the key attributes of an entrepreneur. They are always stretching themselves, putting them in places that they have never been before that can cause them great discomfort, but the more you practice putting yourself uncomfortable situations the more comfortable you become in those situations.
- Also, entrepreneurs do not ask permission to move forward with an idea, a project, a plan, what I like to say is permission granted. If in the event that you find yourself in a bit of trouble, or somebody is upset because of you went forward without asking for permission, you can always ask for forgiveness but an entrepreneur does not ask permission to move forward with an idea or plan. Give yourself a chance to experiment moving forward without asking permission.
- Also, entrepreneurs believe in themselves. They know they can do it even when nobody else does. When I have people tell me that ideal never work, you're crazy. I know that I'm on to something because I know I'm capable of doing it and I can build a team around it to make it happen, believe in yourself and you will go further.
- And then, one of the key attributes that allows entrepreneurs to be successful over time is persistence. No one is successful overnight. 20 years of effort in many cases is what it takes to be successful, so persistence is potentially one of the greatest assets and greatest strengths and skills that an entrepreneur has, never ever giving up.
You're looking to be more creative and innovative? an entrepreneurial mindset is the key to unlocking your potential. Good luck! I will see you in the next video. Thank you very much.
